Business plan for a leather workshop. Own business: production of leather belts. Business plan for the production of leather belts: technology and equipment. Cost of one handmade leather product

Beautiful leather products are always popular. Of course, there are a lot of accessories made in the factory. But their quality will never compare with handmade products. Potential buyers are not even bothered by their very high price. After all, having a stylish item made of genuine leather at your disposal is prestigious and fashionable.

Before purchasing materials, you should first decide what exactly you would like to make. Most leatherworkers are self-taught. They mastered all the intricacies of business through trial and error.

Videos on Youtube and master classes can also help in mastering the craft. You can ask your colleagues on specialized forums about certain subtleties of the matter. They usually share them without any intention. Can be of great help.

You should start a business with simple, uncomplicated accessories. For example, from the production of leather belts. There is little work with them, but they are constantly in demand. This approach will allow you to get better and develop your own author's style. Later you can start making more expensive exclusive items.

Where to find suppliers?

You can purchase the necessary leather raw materials in different ways. Usually craftsmen are not directly involved in tanning; they purchase leather that has already been tanned. The best prices are offered by special tanneries. But they, as a rule, sell leather only in large quantities. Which is an insurmountable obstacle at the initial stages of business development.

Also, in almost every major city there are specialized stores where you can buy not only leather, but also all the necessary accessories. Tanners living far from regional centers can shop online.

If you plan to make small souvenirs and accessories, then you should try to negotiate with small studios to purchase scraps. After all, they sometimes send whole skins for marriage, on the surface of which a very small flaw is found. Another channel for the supply of leather raw materials is second-hand. There are a lot of leather items sold there for a ridiculous price.

What equipment will be needed?

Usually, novice craftsmen make the most minimal markup, just to cover the cost of materials. At the initial stages, there is no talk at all about compensation for the time and effort spent.

To determine the final assortment, you need to constantly study the sales market. Fashion for certain products is constantly changing. Typically, wallets, purses and business card holders are in consistently high demand.

We select personnel

Finding good workers is not an easy task. Those who know their business well are worth their weight in gold. Perhaps the best option is to hire an apprentice who will learn the secrets of leatherworking with you.

You can also use unemployed relatives or just good friends as personnel. You can place an ad on specialized resources like Avito.

How and where to sell finished products

It directly depends on how developed the sales market is. You should promote your products as actively as possible. It is worth working not only on individual orders, but also for the mass consumer. The profit will be significantly higher if you can combine the two work schemes presented above.

One of the most accessible sales channels is the Internet. Its capabilities are not limited to anything.

First, you can create a small online store on a free platform or use the power of social networks. It is also worth visiting special crafts fairs. Visual images play an important role in promoting products. High-quality, beautiful photographs with the appropriate surroundings can sell anything.

Offline stores are also capable. Perhaps in the first few days it will be most profitable for you to agree on handing over the goods for sale or renting a small display case. Later, if everything is successful, you can set your sights on opening your own department or small store.

Is it worth registering a business and certifying products?

Whether it is a business or not, everyone decides for themselves. On the one hand, tax payments and other payments will take away part of the income, on the other hand, if you reach a higher level, you cannot do without registration.

If you have plans to seriously expand your business, you should probably think about product certification. The rules for passing certification and obtaining a declaration of conformity are stipulated in the technical regulations of the Customs Union.

To confirm the competitiveness of products and expand sales channels, it is necessary to undergo both mandatory and voluntary certification. For each of these procedures, its own is collected, which is then submitted to the certification center.

I believe that this type of business is quite profitable now, and has always been. But just like in any other field, it requires specific knowledge and skills. Therefore, you need to approach this issue with a certain amount of knowledge, or select competent personnel.

Answer

I can sew several things out of leather, for example a clutch, a wallet, bracelets, and so on.

Answer

Leather wallets are a very popular and sought-after accessory in the domestic space. Thanks to natural materials, the products are distinguished by style and quality. Compared to factory wallets, custom wallets have a unique design. Therefore, organizing the production of leather wallets will be financially profitable regardless of the region.

Setting up this business involves working in several separate directions at once, in particular, along the way you can produce watch straps, wrist accessories, wallets, chokers and many other popular products. To get maximum productivity, you will need to purchase special equipment and assemble a team of working personnel.

Renting is a benefit for beginning businessmen.

Renting premises at the initial stage of doing business is most preferable as it allows the owner to save a lot of financial resources. You can select suitable rental options using advertisements or specialized web resources based on your specific region.

For a confident start, you should focus on small rooms with a total area of at least 250 square meters. The average cost of such rent in Moscow can be about 12 - 13 thousand rubles per year.

A big advantage will be the presence of connected communications, in particular centralized water supply and electricity. We can highlight the following amount of financial costs for rent: 13,000 (market prices) x 250 (area) = 3.25 million rubles per year. The cost is calculated without taking into account taxes and other various losses.

Procurement of technological tools.

To process leather, you will need special equipment that will allow you to maintain the high quality of raw materials and obtain an absolutely finished product. It is recommended to make purchases from certified dealers. However, if you do not have the funds to purchase new units, you should use the secondary market. To do this, it is better to involve relevant professionals who will help you choose the right type of equipment at affordable prices.

General list of working units for production:

1. Sewing machine (for leather) - RUB 89,000.
2. Machine for stitching in a corporate style - 56,000 rubles.
3. Equipment for applying a brand - 61,000 rubles.
4. Quality control system - 115,000 rubles.
5. Tools for fine processing - 40,000 rubles.

Total costs for the purchase of special tools and equipment: 89,000 + 56,000 + 61,000 + 115,000 + 40,000 = 361,000 rubles. Transportation and installation of working systems will require costs of at least 60,000 rubles. additionally.

Qualified personnel for business.

To establish an efficient production of leather wallets and other accessories, only 3 people are enough. The workforce may consist of the following specialties: master seamstress, leather processing specialist and general worker. The salary level for each specialty is selected taking into account the market average.

The approximate salaries of employees should be highlighted:

1. Master seamstress - 50,000 rubles.
2. Skin specialist - 45,000 rubles.
3. Handyman - 25,000 rubles.

In the future, you will need to hire an advertising and product sales manager with an average salary of 47,000 rubles. Total staff costs: 50,000 + 45,000 + 25,000 = 120,000 rubles/month, with possible expenses for the year - 1.4 million rubles.

Manufacturing technology and procurement of raw materials.

The technology for making leather goods, in particular purses and wallets, is quite simple. For production, high-quality raw materials are selected, which are subsequently processed using special equipment. The specialist performs most of the work manually, which has a positive effect on the overall quality of the product. For production, it is necessary to purchase 1st grade leather that meets all regulatory requirements. Processed raw materials cost around 2,500 rubles per meter. Prices may vary depending on the thickness of the material and the region of purchase.

To advertise finished products, it is best to use proven methods, in particular the most suitable are: creating your own website with a virtual store, press (newspapers, advertisements), radio (city), posting advertisements in transport, making booklets and ordinary leaflets. Due to their low cost and popularity, these methods will allow you to get maximum efficiency with a small investment. On average, an entrepreneur will need at least 300,000 rubles to organize high-quality advertising. The final cost depends on the region.

Sales of finished leather wallets and payback.

Ready-made branded leather wallets and other exclusive accessories can be sold through your store, buyers and individual orders. For more effective sales, it is recommended to take part in an exhibition or any other event in the city where you can demonstrate your own products. The average cost of one product is at least 1,500 rubles. Accordingly, if you sell about 500 pieces per month, you can get an income of 750,000 rubles. For one working year - no less than 9 million rubles, which is quite profitable. Business payback is 5 - 8 months.

Bags and accessories made of leather in a Moscow apartment. They earn half as much as when they worked in the office, but they work twice as hard. “This is much more pleasant than performing the tasks specified in the contract,” entrepreneurs assure. The plans are to expand production, hire seamstresses and go on a long-awaited vacation.

Money on patriotism

In 2014, when the West and Russia exchanged sanctions, Nikita and Katerina played on the patriotic trend. They launched the website Yarussky.com and agreed with manufacturers of T-shirts, mugs and souvenirs that they would sell their goods at a small markup. The first batch of T-shirts with reproductions of paintings by Russian artists sold out with a bang, and Katya, inspired by the success, ordered several dozen muffs from the sewing factory.

The fashion for them returned, and we planned to make money on this as well,” the girl recalls. - But the batch was sewn so crookedly and askew that it was a shame to even sell it. Those couplings are still lying around in the garage.

The “patriotic” online store brought in a small income, but the couple’s interest in the “buy and sell” business quickly faded.

I'm tired of money out of thin air. I wanted to do something with my own hands, to produce,” explains Nikita.

Selfish interest

Then the entrepreneurs analyzed all the trends and, after going through the options, settled on the idea of sewing leather goods. To understand whether it is possible to learn leatherworking from scratch, Nikita went to a master class, from where he brought a belt and bracelet that he made with his own hands.

Inspired, Nikita and Katerina attacked libraries and YouTube: they read Soviet books about leather production, watched videos on how to sew purses, belts and bags at home. The videos in Japanese turned out to be the most useful: Katya found a video with English subtitles, and her training as a translator already helped.

In order not to overpay, Nikita decided to buy equipment second-hand: “At lunch, my colleagues were discussing what movie they watched over the weekend, and at that time I was fiddling with Avito.” A new straight-stitch sewing machine cost 50,000 rubles. We spent a total of about 350,000 rubles on the rest of the equipment - 130,000 less than if we bought new.

About another 10,000 rubles were spent on purchasing four skins and fittings for a test batch of accessories. The leather was bought from Moscow dealers, whom they found on the Internet; they did not even count on cooperation with factories that sell large quantities. This is where the tanners' start-up costs ended.

The production was placed with Nikita: he had just taken out a mortgage on a room in a two-room apartment at the River Station. Nikita was appointed chief tailor.

Leather is a heavy material, and working with it requires physical strength. And I was also afraid of these scary cars, I thought that I would ruin everything right away,” says Katya. - If an incorrectly sewn dress can be ripped open and remade, then due to an extra puncture in the skin, the entire cut must be thrown away.

We produce things from leather and teach those interested the basics of leather craftsmanship. Nikita came to one of these master classes two years ago. As he says, this is where the SoRoKo workshop began. It's nice to see that the seeds we sow produce such noble shoots.

Economics of leather

We trained on little things: we sewed cardholders and wallets, which were distributed among friends and acquaintances. Having filled their hand, Nikita and Katya put the product up for sale on social networks. The best buys were small handbags made of leather in different colors - 4 pilot copies were sold within a day, and by the end of the week orders for another 10 pieces arrived.

We decided to keep it simple with the design and settled on the classics. “I found an old Valentino bag at home - it belonged to my grandmother and it looks modern,” recalls Katya. Entrepreneurs took this model as the basis for the production of the first line of bags.

The markup on both “little things” like a purse, and on the most technically complex product - backpacks - reaches 100%. Thus, a backpack worth 10,000 rubles, which takes 3–4 hours to manufacture, brings entrepreneurs up to 5,000 rubles in income. The cost of a wallet does not exceed 1,200 rubles, and at retail they are sold for 2,200–3,300 rubles. Nikita and Katya sew a dozen purses together in 8–10 hours.

The classics were diluted with a sword belt - a women's accessory in the form of a leather belt. Katya was told about him by a friend who made a splash by appearing in a sword belt at the board of directors at the bank.

Nikita didn’t even understand what kind of thing this was and was against it, but I decided to try it,” recalls Tsmokilina. - The product turned out to be so popular that all autumn and winter I felt like a slave to these sword belts: I sewed 5-6 pieces a day, and they all flew apart.

Photo courtesy of SoRoKo (photographer: Andrey Pavlov)

Katya spends 30–40 minutes on one harness, the price of materials does not exceed 500 rubles, and accessories retail for 2,000 rubles.

At the same time, entrepreneurs established sales through partner stores. “It was not easy to come to an agreement: some wanted a discount of 60–70% of the retail price, but they only took it for sale; they did not want to buy it back. Or they made a 300% markup, and our backpack for 7,500 rubles cost 18–20 thousand,” recalls Nikita. Now SoRoKo has 4 distributors in Moscow: these are online and offline stores selling leather. Nikita and Katya sell them products wholesale, and they charge “as much as their conscience allows.” The price of SoRoKo backpacks in such retail outlets reaches up to 15,000 rubles. “And sometimes they buy even better than on our website or in social networks,” Nikita is perplexed. The workshop sells 30% of its products through partners, the remaining 70% through SoRoKo pages and its own accounts on social networks.

Demand throughout the year obeys the classical laws of retail: in December, February and March there is a peak in sales; in January and summer, when Muscovites leave the city, demand decreases by 30–50%. At this time, corporate orders, which also occur during bad months, are saved. One batch of gifts brings up to 25,000 rubles in net profit. “I really love such orders - you do the same things for several days in a row, one after another, it’s like a mantra,” says Katya.

Now the core of the SoRoKo audience is working girls 25–30 years old. “We thought it would be mostly hipsters who would buy us. But unfortunately, they haven’t appreciated us yet,” Nikita admits. He considers the same small leather workshops as competitors. SoRoKo is not going to compete with large factories: this is a completely different market.

Marusya Simonova

co-founder of the Simon Second Skin workshop:

The workshops work with the subculture, with those who do not need the mass market. We consider ourselves artists, and competition with factories is like a struggle between man and machine: the possibilities are different, but the resulting product is completely different.

Not a craft, but a business

When things got going, the entrepreneurs decided to move production from the room to a separate site. We found the premises by chance: Nikita received an email with an offer to rent a pavilion at VDNKh. “At first I thought it was spam. Then I decided not to answer - I assumed that rent at VDNKh would cost an exorbitant amount of money.” But it turned out that for a space of 20 m² they were asking 16,000 rubles. So in August 2016, the SoRoKo workshop moved to the pavilion of the Crafts Park at VDNKh.

Entrepreneurs were delighted by the dense flow of passers-by, but quickly realized that they would not be able to use the traffic. Most of the companies that inhabited the Park made good money from master classes. The tanners also decided to try, but only three people bought tickets for a sword belt sewing lesson worth 3,000 rubles.

I worked with these three girls for 2.5 hours. During this time, Nikita and I could sew a batch of these sword belts and another backpack, earning much more,” says Katya. - Then we realized that we were not artisans, but businessmen.

People who constantly entered the pavilion without knocking and interfered with work added fuel to the fire. And the renovations that began at VDNKh finally convinced the entrepreneurs that it was time to move out. While the workshop consists of only two founders, they decided to place production in Katya’s three-room apartment. “Yes, I was lucky with the girl,” Nikita, a resident of Syktyvkar, laughs. The neighbors haven't complained yet: all the equipment is modern and quiet. We had to isolate only the table with a hammer and a punch - the guys put the leather on a special plate covered with felt, and the table itself was placed on rubber carpets.

By the time of publication of this material, the workshop’s revenue is 200–250 thousand rubles per month, profit - from 90 to 120 thousand.

Nikita and Katya plan to expand the business: hire several seamstresses, rent premises for production and increase turnover. This will make it possible to purchase large quantities of hides from manufacturing plants, and not from resellers, as now, and reduce retail prices. And even later, entrepreneurs want to develop a line of products made from different materials: leather, wood and metal. “You can learn anything,” they say SoRoKo.

Maxim and Evgenia Lavrik

founders of the KAZA workshop, Krasnodar:

The production of leather goods cannot be called a super profitable business at the moment. Partly due to the crisis and the euro exchange rate. We order most of the fittings for foreign currency; the factories themselves use foreign-made dyes. We continue to work thanks to our regular customers: we have been on the market for the 8th year and during this time we have gathered a large group of friends. But production development has had to be suspended for now in order to survive these difficult times.

Beautiful products made from genuine leather have been in great demand since ancient times, but they are becoming especially popular now. Of course, there are a large number of both foreign and domestic manufacturers, whose assortment includes leather accessories of various designs. However, they can never match the quality and originality of handmade products.

The range of leather products that you can make is quite large. Various decorations and accessories using genuine leather still remain relevant: bags, belts, wallets, jewelry, clothing, shoes, bindings for notebooks, books and magazines, etc.

The main methods of tanning genuine leather

The main raw material for the manufacture of such products is genuine leather, which has undergone pre-treatment. There are several main methods of tanning natural leather, among which are the following: raw leather (with minimal processing and preserving the original qualities of the original material), rawhide (tanning is carried out without tanning), rawhide tanning (light tanning with alum), tanned leather (obtained in as a result of fat tanning or with the addition of vegetable and artificial chemical tannins).

As a rule, craftsmen who manufacture various leather products do not tan their own leather. This procedure is carried out at special tanneries in various countries around the world. Craftsmen purchase from them ready-made leather of the following types: opoek, sklizok, outgrowth, nappa, chevro, husky, shagreen, morocco, natural suede, deerskin, saddle leather, velor, napplak, shora, split velor, yuft, parchment.

Trending product 2019..

For each type of product, one or another type of leather is used. You can purchase all the necessary materials in specialized stores that can be found in large cities. Craftsmen who live in the region, far from the center, order them through online stores (including foreign ones), as well as in sewing studios. By the way, if you are engaged in the manufacture of small products - jewelry, toys, accessories, then you can significantly save on the purchase of raw materials by negotiating with local studios, which often sell leftovers and trimmings of large leather pieces at low prices. Often, leather products that have already gone out of fashion - old shoes, bags, outerwear - can be suitable for work (and even more so, training). Such well-crafted leather goods can be found in second-hand stores at very low prices.

Determining the cost of leather

When purchasing leather in specialized stores, its price is indicated by the seller per 1 square decimeter. It is usually sold in whole pieces (hides or pelts). The cost may vary depending on the type of leather (calf, pork, goat), the characteristics and quality of the dressing, the thickness of the skin, and ranges from 5 to 50 rubles per square decimeter. The skin of more exotic species of animals (for example, ostrich, crocodile, etc.) will cost an order of magnitude more - from one hundred rubles per square decimeter and more.

When calculating the cost of one product, take into account the fact that the area of the smallest skin is at least 40 square decimeters. For this reason, for the manufacture of small products - jewelry, accessories, etc. - purchasing material in whole skins is unprofitable. And scraps of genuine leather can be purchased in the studio at a price of 100-200 rubles per kilogram. The total area of one kilogram of scraps is about 50-60 square decimeters.

What tools are required for working with leather?

The list of the main ones includes scissors, knives, wide and long metal rulers, a metal square, a French knife, a hole punch (punch), a vice, and a clamp. Experts advise using special self-sharpening scissors for tailors. The following brands have proven themselves well: Scheren konig scissors, RTY-2/DX Olfa knife, CK-2 Olfa utility knife, AK-1/5B Olfa art knife. In addition, you will need to purchase a compass knife and some other types of knives for special techniques and special types of products.

If possible, try not to skimp on tools, because the quality of your finished work will directly depend on them. Experts recommend using knives with replaceable blades rather than solid ones, since the first option turns out to be more profitable.

Some of the necessary tools can be purchased in regular construction stores, and some can be purchased in specialized online stores, which usually deliver orders throughout the country. If you are still just learning and are not sure that making products from genuine leather will become not just a hobby, but the basis for your business, then you can get by with less investment and use stationery and shoe knives for the work, the cost of which is an order of magnitude lower than special expensive ones. tools. However, there are also disadvantages: the blades of stationery knives have to be changed more often when working with leather, and shoe knives require frequent sharpening, so using them for a long time is not so profitable.

Each tool from the list above has its own purpose. For example, using a wide, long metal ruler and a metal square, you can cut off the required amount of material as smoothly and safely as possible for your own fingers. A French knife is used to roughen (thin) the skin.

Since sanding is a very labor-intensive procedure, it takes a lot of time and effort, so usually they try to obtain the skin of the required thickness for such processing. A vice allows you to fix the product in the desired position during operation. Using a clamp, several large parts are clamped when gluing. If you plan to make bags and other large items, it is best to purchase several clamps at once.

If you are a beginner in this area and have not had much experience in working with leather and making leather products, then it is better to consult with professionals, read specialized literature and articles on thematic resources on the Internet before going for tools. Such preliminary preparation will help save a lot of money. For example, for working with leather, you can purchase inexpensive and fairly high-quality Stayer or Legioner hole punchers, rather than special expensive models. They are sold in construction and sewing stores, as well as where a variety of creative supplies are sold.

How to start a leather goods business

You can make handmade leather products at home. The main thing is that you have at your disposal a fairly spacious and well-ventilated room (which is important when working with adhesives) where you can conveniently place a work table, equipment, shelves with materials and finished products. There are no special requirements for workplace equipment. The main thing is that it is comfortable for you. Any wide, stable table is suitable for work.

But you need to take into account that when cutting and slicing parts for a product, the surface on which the material is laid out must be non-slip (otherwise the skin will constantly slide off and you will not be able to carefully cut out the parts), hard (so that the knife does not get stuck in the base) and not textured. If you are working on a wooden tabletop, then you first need to cover it with a piece of linoleum, hardboard, plexiglass, or at least a plastic kitchen board or a board for modeling plasticine (for small products), otherwise the knife, when cutting leather, will constantly “go astray” from the line and go along wood fiber.

In addition to the actual leather and tools, you may also need various additional elements and materials - fittings (and equipment for installing them), paints, varnishes, etc. The exact list depends on the model and your imagination.

Ready ideas for your business

To begin with, it is better to choose products that do not require much time to make: belts, simple jewelry and simple accessories. Then, when you get the hang of it, find your own style and choose a working technique that suits you, you can take on more complex projects. However, think ahead about the pricing system for your products. Obviously, complex and exclusive handmade items will cost an order of magnitude more than industrially produced goods. On the other hand, you need to rationally evaluate the level of your work and your skill. Experienced craftsmen advise novice entrepreneurs to set a small markup on their work produced for sale. As a rule, a calculation is given according to the following scheme: the cost of materials plus 10-25% on top.

This way you will be able to study for the first time, recoup the costs of materials and accessories, and at least compensate for your efforts a little. In the case of products of a higher level of execution, the following scheme is usually used: the cost of the finished product plus 150-200% on top. Of course, this rule can change, because a lot depends on how much time and effort went into the work, how original it is, whether you have already earned your own name (or rather, whether your name as a master has become a kind of brand).

Where to distribute leather products

You can search for first and subsequent buyers both on the Internet and beyond. In the first case, experienced entrepreneurs advise creating accounts on the most famous social networks and be sure to create your own website. You should also not ignore resources such as Etsy, Crafts Fair, etc. They may not become the main sales channel, but being present on them will help you make your brand more recognizable. An important role (although it is often underestimated) is played by high-quality and beautiful photographs of your products. It is impossible to sell an expensive item with a bad photo taken on a point-and-shoot camera. To do this, you don’t need to seek help from a professional photographer. All you need is a good camera and thoughtful surroundings that will help highlight all the advantages of your product.

In addition, handmade genuine leather products are sold through regular, offline stores of souvenirs and gifts, accessories, clothing, etc. Think in advance whether you will take orders or sell ready-made items. In the first case, you can increase your profit, but this option is associated with certain risks, especially if you do not take an advance payment from the customer.

Ready ideas for your business

The business of manufacturing genuine leather products is profitable and is little affected by seasonality (leather bags, belts, jewelry and accessories are usually in demand all year round). The purchase of materials, accessories and tools, as well as training, will require about 30-50 thousand rubles. But you can get by with smaller investments at the first stage if you have experience in this field and an additional source of income for the first six months.

Old jackets, bags and belts can be easily repurposed into a modern wardrobe item or stylish accessory. The main thing is to be patient and master some skills.

So, before we study several detailed master classes, I would like to pay special attention to the main aspects of working with leather:

  • Absolutely any leather is suitable for this work, even small pieces.
  • To remove stubborn stains or dirt from the surface of the skin, it is better to use regular running water and a sponge.
  • Any stain removers or detergents have a detrimental effect on the skin, making it rough and brittle.
  • To soften the skin and make it more elastic, the front surface of the material can be treated with glycerin.
  • To connect individual parts, you can use special rivets, clips, and threads.
  • If you need to make a seam, it is better to use a sewing machine.
  • Choose needles of the appropriate gauge to avoid making too large holes in the skin.
  • If you want the product to be neat and stylish, use special tools, in particular, a punch, a hole punch, pliers, stamps, a hammer and a vice.
  • It is better to cut out individual parts from leather on a dense surface; a cutting board is ideal for this.
  • You can decorate leather products with various accessories: sequins, beads, beads, rhinestones, metal clips, buttons, laces, etc.
  • To make the edges of a leather craft look smooth, they can be treated with a cord or burned with fire.

To make leather products, you must choose a spacious, well-ventilated room. It is best to rent a workshop in an industrial zone. Its area will not be very large. 60 m2 is quite enough to geographically divide the area where the technological processes for making leather souvenirs will be carried out, and raw materials and already manufactured products will be stored.

Each master should have his own place with equipment. It is necessary to conveniently arrange racks with finished products, as well as raw materials and supplies. There are no special requirements for the equipment of the workplace; the main thing is that the craftsmen feel comfortable working.

It is good if the room is heated in winter and all communications are functioning normally. To rent a room of this type you need to pay about $300 per month. Most often, the owner of the premises will demand to pay rent for half a year or even all 12 months in advance.

Raw materials.

The main raw material for making leather souvenirs is natural high-quality leather. This material must be pre-treated before use. Typically, craftsmen who make leather products use already processed leather.

Since this procedure requires special equipment and is carried out in many countries around the world. And the craftsmen purchase already fully prepared leather of a certain type (like, slick, opoeka, natural suede and others). Each individual product may require a specific type of leather. If you need to buy a small amount of raw materials, then it is most profitable to do this in a specialized store, which is definitely located in large cities of our state.

Most often, the price of leather is set per 1 m2. There you can also purchase some details (rivets, clips, buttons, etc.), which allow you to complete the image of each souvenir. But if you plan to produce tiny volumes of products, then you can try to save a little on raw materials. You can contact existing tailoring studios and shoe factories and purchase leftovers and pieces of leather from them. In total, about $1.5 thousand must be allocated for the purchase of raw materials.

Equipment and tools.

To work with leather you need to purchase special tools:

1. Strubnitsa - $120;

2. Vise - $80;

3. Hole puncher - $75;

4. French knife - $150;

5. Set of metal rulers - $100;

6. Professional self-sharpening scissors - $200;

7. Metal square - $25;

8. Set of knives (art knife, utility knife, circular knife and others) - $450.

To perform high-quality and precise work, you cannot skimp on tools and devices for working with leather elements. It is best to choose knives whose blades can be easily changed. You can even use tools that are designed for shoemaking or sewing work.

You can buy all the tools in specialized stores or order them through the online store. In total, you need to focus on an amount of about 3-3.5 thousand $.

Staff.

To make leather souvenirs, you need to invite leather craftsmen to work. You can find such craftsmen, but sometimes they demand too high a fee for their work. It’s worth trying to hire 3-4 people who are ready to learn and one experienced craftsman who will have to pass on his craft to people. Alternatively, you can simply pay for the courses.

In addition, the workshop will require an experienced purchasing and sales manager in this industry. When negotiating wages, you can settle on a certain salary or make it a piece-rate bonus. Everything will depend on the mutual consent of the employee and the employer. In addition to foremen and a manager, the enterprise will definitely need an accountant. In total, about $6 thousand must be allocated to pay workers.

Marketing.

You can promote your own leather souvenirs both online and offline. You can create your own website on the Internet, constantly posting there new manufactured products with prices for them. Each product must be professionally photographed. To do this, you may have to contact a photographer and even hire a studio. You can also create a group on social networks and constantly offer your products on forums. You can also print advertisements in fashion magazines and newspapers.

Don’t forget about the possibilities of outdoor advertising. Signs should be placed in public places. You can also take part in exhibitions and fairs. At the same time, you can participate in such events, both at the local level and at the regional level, or even outside our state. In total, you can allocate about $300 for marketing and promoting your own leather souvenirs.

Basic costs.

Opening your own workshop for the production of leather souvenirs will require the following main expenses:

1. Rental of premises - $300;

2. Equipment and tools - $3-3.5 thousand;

3. Staff - $6 thousand;

4. Raw materials - $1.5 thousand;

5. Marketing - $300.

In total, to start a business in this direction, you need to own an amount of at least $14-15 thousand.

Profit and payback period of the business.

The payback period is difficult to predict, since the development and profit of this industry depends on many factors. In the first place is the beauty and quality of the manufactured products, and in the second place is the marketing strategy and cost of leather souvenirs. But, if we consider the most favorable atmosphere, then a period of up to one year can be agreed upon. After all, all products will be made using manual labor. Therefore, the cost of such will be several times higher than factory crafts.

For example, the average price of a manufactured souvenir will be about $70, while the markup on a copy will fluctuate between 200-300%. If you have 3 craftsmen working for you, and they produce at least 10-15 souvenirs per day of average complexity, then the net profit will start from $1.5 thousand per day. You just need to figure out where to put the souvenirs and who to sell them to.

Clients and business development.

The leather souvenirs produced will be sold to regular and virtual souvenir and gift outlets, clothing stores, accessories stores and others. It is worth developing a business by constantly expanding the range of products. On the territory of the workshop you can open a training school for craftsmen to work with leather souvenirs. Ultimately, you need to strive to open your own store to sell products.

Hi people!
I've noticed that the theme of handcrafted minimalist leather wallets is on the rise. But they are somewhat expensive. Prices start from 4 thousand in online stores.
Now I'm wintering in Thailand. After wandering around the local evening markets, I found a guy who makes leather goods. Bags, wallets, cases, something else. I showed him a photo of my wallet (travel, for 4 thousand) and asked how much it would cost. He said 400 baht (the same as rubles) and a day or two for production. I ordered delivery - to the Russian Federation 200-300 rubles and about 2 weeks. I add my money for organizing the process another 400 rubles. To design it beautifully and package it costs 30-40 rubles. Well, and a free sesame candy for 10 rubles.
The total is: approximately 1000 rubles already with delivery to the client’s door in the Russian Federation.

It turns out I find a client in Russia. I will agree on the details with him. I hand it over to my artisan for production. Packing. I'm sending it. Here is the algorithm.

People, am I the only one who thinks this price is too high for Russia?

So how do you think the topic will be trampled?

24 Nov 2013

I think it will trample. Even though I’m not from Russia, I think it will work. How to present the main thing. Watching the assortment of leather accessories in Ukraine makes you want to spit. Cheap - China, Expensive - Italy, etc. China is consumer goods (mostly), and Italy or some other expensive manufacturer, the quality is not bad, but it’s stupid to overpay for the brand. I was also thinking about starting with at least a smaller workshop, the only thing is to find a good master, familiar designers would also help. In general, try it, everything will work out! Good luck!
