Everyone is used to buying tea in a store in already familiar packaging. It is the key to the quality of the tea leaf, and most importantly, it preserves it for a long time, as it protects it from external influences. Government authorities have special requirements for the packaging process, which relate to both the quality of the sheet itself and the packaging. What you need to know about the packaged product to always drink good tea

What is packaged tea

Green and black packaged tea is a leaf, granular and small product, which is packaged in soft or semi-rigid (metalized) packaging of 25 - 250 grams or more. For industrial use, packaging of 1.5 kg is allowed. If we are talking about tea for one-time use, that is, bagged, it is scattered into filter bags weighing 2, 2.5, 3 and 4 grams, depending on the variety and category.

The most stringent requirements apply to premium tea and “Bouquet” - large-leaf tea, which, in accordance with technical conditions, cannot be mixed with products of lower quality.

According to GOST, there are also first, second and third grades of tea, the quality of which is determined by the size of the leaf, taste, color of the infusion and other indicators.

When packaging tea of the “Bouquet” variety, the presence of small items in the packaging is allowed in a volume of no more than 1% of the total mass. For other varieties this figure can reach 5%. Black long tea of the highest quality should have an even twisted leaf, a transparent infusion, pronounced astringency and a red-brown color of the tea leaves. The intensity of all indicators decreases from “Bouquet” to third grade.

When packed, green long tea must meet technical conditions similar to black tea. Here the same list of varieties is distinguished from “Bouquet” to the third, similar volumes for packaging, the differences relate only to organoleptic properties, which are due to the natural characteristics of the product. High-quality green tea must have a pleasant astringency, a delicate aroma, and a light green transparent color of the infusion.

How tea is packaged

Tea is packaged in factories that purchase large quantities of the product from producing countries. Unpackaged tea is transported in large containers - bags, boxes, boxes of 10 kilograms or more. At the initial stage of packaging, the sheet is cleaned of various types of impurities, including metallomagnetic ones.

At the second stage, different types of tea are mixed in a large drum, that is, a blending process is carried out, thanks to which the best taste, aroma and color of the infusion is achieved when brewing. Next comes the main stage - direct packaging in bags and boxes. A special device automatically divides the tea into equal portions and places it in a package. The intermediate stage preceding direct packaging is the process of imparting a given aroma and taste to the sheet, if provided for by the technology.

Filter bag filling machine

Tea in filter bags is produced by a special machine. Depending on the brand, its productivity can reach 400 bags per minute or more. In the sachet packaging process, all steps except for placing into large boxes are performed by machines. The person here only controls the process and sets the necessary parameters. The machine feeds the paper, measures the required amount of tea, and wraps it with a thread with a label. There are machines that collect a specified number of sachets and place them in boxes, which are later wrapped in plastic film. The last step is often performed by people.

Depending on the brand, filter bags can simply be sealed under a press, or they can have threads with labels. The packaging equipment can work with black, green, herbal and flower tea. There are machines that produce not only single-chamber filter bags, but also oval and pyramid ones.

You can buy empty bags in packs and fill them yourself with tea, herbs, berries and fruits, creating your favorite combinations

The last two types are more expensive, but this does not change the quality of the infusion. These are purely aesthetic preferences. To check the quality of tea, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the filter bag itself. If it is made of fine mesh plastic mesh with large holes, then the manufacturer packed a large sheet in it, since fine dust simply spills out of it. Paper filter bags have small pores, so the tea dust is reliably captured in them.

Packaging requirements

When packaging tea, special attention is paid to the quality of the packaging, since the shelf life of the product and its taste properties depend on this. Packaging of tea involves the use of glass, wooden, metal, paper boxes with a capacity of 5 g to 3 kg. In some cases, packaging in polyethylene films intended for food products with a capacity of 200 g to 3 kg is allowed.

Types of tea packaging are varied, colorful and memorable

If we are talking about soft packaging, it should consist of an inner paper part and an outer foil part. In semi-rigid packaging there is also an inner foil part and an outer cardboard part. This is the most common packaging option for both black and green tea, called cardboard packs.

Bagged tea should be packed in plastic bags or cardboard boxes. The bags themselves should have a capacity of 2 to 4 g and be made of non-soaking porous paper. Additionally, filter bags can be packaged in metallized individual bags.

Kraft paper bags are the most common and safest option for tea packaging.

Paper, cardboard, foil and other materials for tea packaging must be made from a certain grade of material, taking into account its weight and production method. Today, there are many more variations in packaging for tea leaves, but the basic technical conditions must be met by each manufacturer.

Packaging filter bags

The history of the disposable packaging bag began more than 100 years ago with a misunderstanding that later turned into a profitable business. English businessman Thomas Sullivan began sending small portions of new tea leaf blends in silk bags instead of the usual tin cans. Tasters and potential buyers considered this a misunderstanding, but they brewed tea directly from the bag.

Today, tea bags are packaged in special filter paper, which does not get soggy and allows the tea leaves to straighten and brew well.

The main condition for obtaining a quick and strong infusion is to use a type of tea such as fannings. It is a crushed tea leaf that quickly releases all extractive components to hot water.

Bagged tea is not always made from the lowest grade leaves or so-called production waste. Many well-known companies produce the product by independently grinding a large leaf in order to subsequently obtain a drink rich in taste, color and aroma in a matter of seconds. Unscrupulous manufacturers pack the finest leaves and tea dust into filter bags, and in order to improve the organoleptic properties of the drink, enrich it with artificial flavors and dyes.

The production of bagged tea or coffee is difficult to establish at home as a business. Such production requires a special room for storing and packaging raw materials, placing equipment and workers. In China, some of the most expensive teas are packed into bags by hand, measuring the weight of each on special scales. This is often done by families, for whom it is a business passed down from generation to generation.

The history of packaged tea is almost as long-lasting as the history of growing the leaf itself. Tea companies never cease to surprise customers with new blends, various tastes and aromas to make the tea ceremony even more enjoyable and bring people together.

Equipment for packaging tea in disposable filter bags

Equipment for packaging tea in filter bags

In its modern form, the tea bag was invented in 1929 by engineer Adolf Rambold, who worked at Teekanne (Germany). In the same year, he also created a packaging machine. 20 years later, this company patented a two-chamber pouch. Today, bagged tea accounts for over half of all sales in Russia, almost 80% in Europe and 90–96% in the UK. This explains why equipment for packaging and packaging tea in bags with a label and thread is in great demand, and not only among large tea producers.

We all love tea, coffee, various herbal infusions and other similar products. Manufacturers and distributors, in order to preserve all the unique taste qualities, use bags for packaging tea and coffee - they can be purchased in bulk in specialized stores. It seemed like how such simple products could play such an important role in storing products?

Special paper products allow packaging of bulk and piece products. We are talking not only about popular drinks, but also medicinal herbs, tinctures, mustard powders, herbs, and so on. Many herbs are sold pre-packaged in filter bags, eliminating the guesswork of whether you weighed the herb correctly or not. Tea bags are a guarantee that you have taken exactly as much herbs as you need, no more and no less. Standard tea bags contain one teaspoon of dried herb. One teaspoon is just about the average dose for an herb that is both safe and effective. This measure is also great for measuring the amount of dried herb if you are brewing your own. Today you can order tea, herbs and other goods packaged in paper filter bags via the Internet. It is very important to determine the density of the packaging material. If the paper is not strong enough, it will tear or will not be able to be stored properly. If the paper is too strong, it will not fully reveal the entire palette of flavors of the product. We purchase filter paper of the highest quality.

Packaging is carried out by forming two types of tea bags: a bag with a tag and a “cushion” bag. The scope is wide. Paper materials are actively used in the food industry and medicine, plus many people purchase equipment to run a business. Even some small store owners need to use filter bags.

The advantages of the product are obvious:

  • Ability to properly store bulk goods.
  • Low price.
  • Various execution options. Today, craft bags for tea and coffee are popular, which are offered by many manufacturers.
  • Easy to use. No special requirements need to be met.

Equipment for the production of

Of course, not every person can purchase imported modern equipment for packaging in filter bags. Automatic installations seem to be the most expensive. You set the operating mode, fill the machine with the necessary components and wait for the equipment to cope with the task. Manufacturers in Moscow and other large cities use automatic equipment.

In order for packaging for tea, coffee, medicinal herbs, tinctures, infusions and other goods to be carried out correctly, you must trust high-quality and expensive equipment. At the same time, the experience of employees is also important. They must exercise control over the production process, check the serviceability of equipment, and, if necessary, quickly get rid of unsuccessfully manufactured products.
